Mindfulness is not a one-time activity and is not limited only to breathing exercises or meditation practices. Mindfulness is an attitude that is possible in every single moment of the language class. Rather than finding a topic for cultivating mindfulness or using some exercises from time to time, look for integrating a mindful attitude towards language learning. That is only possible by being present with all the senses in the classroom.
Make it a part of classroom learning by incorporating it into curriculum-themed activities through sensory experiences, breathing exercises, guided imagery, and movement.
Students can be encouraged to choose mindfulness practices that reflect their needs and interests.
Make time for mindfulness practices in the classroom to help students grow emotionally, socially, and academically.
Students can even practice mindfulness between classes by just sitting quietly, breathing naturally, and observing the moment non-judgmentally.
Consider attitudes of mindfulness and how you can incorporate them into ELT (see attitudes)
Explain to the students what they are going to do and how they benefit from a mindful attitude toward English language learning. Explain the science behind mindfulness according to the level and age of the students.
Be patient about the adjustment of students to mindfulness. It may take time and a mindful attitude will grow stronger out of constant exercise.
Keep all mindfulness activities and instructions simple. Language input in the mindfulness activities should be proper to the level of students.
Mindfulness Activities should not disrupt the flow of the lesson. It should be integrated with harmony according to the topic of the lesson and other language activities.
Making students keep a portfolio of the exercises can be very effective. With the help of these, they can practice the exercises outside the classroom and integrate mindfulness into their lives.
mindfulness can be integrated into the teaching of all language skills and areas. Always prioritize your learning outcomes and integrate mindfulness accordingly.
Ask students how they feel during and after mindful practices. In this way, they can be aware of their feelings, mental states, and bodies.
Integrate technology with a mindful attitude. Technological tools and materials (e.g., augmented reality, artificial intelligence, applications, online tools, etc.) can be used to cultivate mindfulness for language learning.
Pay attention to the age, level of the students, the physical atmosphere of the class, and the learning outcomes while integrating mindfulness into the language classroom.
Mindfulness is for everybody and can be practiced in every class.
